The Municipal area covers approximately 3993 square kilometres and includes the following settlements: Middelburg, Mhluzi, Hendrina, Kwazamokuhle, Rietkuil, Pullenshope, Komati, Presidentsrus, Naledi, Lesedi, Kranspoort, Blinkpan, Koornfontein, Kwamakalane, Piet Tlou, Somaphepha and Sikhululiwe village. This is a category B Municipality comprising of 58 councillors of whom 29 are ward representatives and 29 proportional representatives. The population is estimated at 278 749 citizens in terms of 2016 Community Survey. The majority lives in the town of Middelburg and Mhluzi whilst others reside in smaller settlements; Hendrina, Kwazamokuhle and other vast rural areas. The main economic activities include manufacturing, mining and agricultural activities. This Local Municipality is situated 1 492 metres above sea-level on the main road to the Mpumalanga Lowveld and the Kruger National Park. There are strong coal, copper and platinum (Sheba’s Ridge) mining activities in the area supported by the large mining companies as well as independent operators. There is a variety of agricultural activities ranging from maize and cattle farming, and three of Eskom’s (South Africa's utility) powers generating plants are within the municipal boundaries.
