Rotterdam is home to Europe’s largest port which embodies an extensive petrochemical cluster. The port yields a high share of heavy traffic on the Rotterdam roads and busy navigation. The Rotterdam Climate Initiative (RCI) is the climate programme of the city of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam, Deltalinqs (organisation for logistical and industrial companies in the Rotterdam port) and DCMR Environmental Protection Agency Rijnmond. The aim of the RCI is to achieve 20 PJ energy reduction by 2020 and have 800 MW on sustainable energy production, prepare for climate change, and promote the Rotterdam economy. The RCI offers a platform for government, organizations, companies and citizens to work together on these goals. Rotterdam is part of the Clinton Climate Initiative. Our approach is based on three principles: energy saving, sustainable energy and CO2 capture and storage. In the energy port Rotterdam all preconditions are satisfied to become the CO2 hub of Europe. The RCI (government as well as companies) has the will and the power to realize the ambitions. Rotterdam takes a strong position in this respect as a result of intensive national and international collaboration.
