It was the country’s firstand still only engineered safe and lined landfillwith methane gas capture. It was also the firstmunicipal carbon finance partnership in theMiddle East.To date, three cells have been filled and safelycapped and methane gas is being extracted,a fourth cell is filled and will be capped andconnected to the biogas system shortly.Donors continue to fund development ofthe project to build additional cells and capthe filled ones. The site receives around 4,300tons per day and 1,548,000 ton/yr in 2018.Currently, the captured landfill gas producedis flared off, as there has been a delay inapproval for the grid connection. Onceconnected, the gas will fuel the electricityneeds of Al Ghabawi and the remainder willbe set back to the national grid. In 2019, thecurrent cells will produce 4.8 MW per hour. Theproduction of methane gas in the new cellswill compensate for the depreciation in cells1-3, thereby ensuring a constant flow of gas.BENEFITS • Benefits include reducedenvironmental pollution and litter, protectionof ground water from contamination, loweroperating costs for Amman, as well as areduction in local air pollution.

If your city is reporting an updated inventory, we encourage reporting this in the CRF format, for which guidance can be found in the link below. Would you like to report your inventory in the CRF format or continue to report in the GPC format? Please ensure you respond to this question in order for the correct emissions breakdown questions to be displayed.0No – continue to use the GPC format
