It has 432 Km² of area and a population of aproximatedly 1.800.000 inhabitants. The population is composed by several different backgrounds like descendents of italians, polish, japanese, ukrainian, germans, portuguese and others.Curitiba is known in Brazil and in the world for its urban planning, environmental programs and its public transportation system. Early, in the 1940, there was already a concern whith the development of the city, so the french architect Alfrdo Agache was hired to develop the first Master Plan. In 1965 the final plan was approved and implemented. This guideline helped the city to grown in a controlled manner, allowing the city to have today 38 parks, a transportation system that one my run the intire city with just one bus token e 100% of house waste collected and treated.00

18150CDP Cities 201237261City of PietermaritzburgGovernanceGovernanceNotRepeatable12012-Cities-Governance-1.0In the past, the City had no Climate Change strategy. However, a district-wide climate change study has been commissioned and the results and recommendations will be put to good use - particularly in Pietermaritzburg. After having attended and participated in COP 17, the city is increasingly trying to put measures in place to address climate change related matters in the city and to ascertain how the city and its citizens can mitigate against and adapt to climate change. The problem currently facing the City relates to capacity within its Environmental Section: the staff structure is such that there is only one person responsible for climate change matters within the Municipality.00
