727CDP Cities 201435858City of Cape TownRisks & AdaptationPhysical RisksNotRepeatable2.2aCities-2.2a-Physical-RisksTourism is a major economic driver of the city. All the aforementioned impacts will affect the city’s economy because the city is dependent on its natural assets for its tourism economy. Much of Cape Towns poorest population live in inhospitable areas particularly exposed to flooding causing damage to infrastructure and a huge burden of cost on the City in repiar and maintanance. Severe economic costs such as the repair, replacement or removal of infrastructure and services due to climate change impacts will spend precious amounts of the city's budget.00

The City is busy rolling out its Integrated Rapid Transit which seeks to connect the taxi, train, bus, pedestrian and bicycle routes into one coherent network. The project promotes the use of public transport as opposed to private vehicle use. The City pioneered local government support for wind generation through its contract to purchase electricity produced by Darling Wind farm. This is sold to companies who receive a Green Energy Certificate for their purchase.5Cities-7.1-C3-Comment3

The City is investigating options to facilitate residential and commercial led small scale embedded renewable energy generation. The City is busy undertaking a pilot project to test bi-directional metering for small scale embedded generation, will implement an appropriate feed in tariff (net-metered domestic) and is in the process of developing a Small Scale Embedded Generation Policy. A process for grid tied and exporting onto the grid has been developed and the City is currently working on back-end functionalities to enable exporting onto the grid. The City is also installing photovoltaic systems on specific administrative buildings.1Cities-7.1-C3-Comment3

The EE Forum is a public-private partnership between the City, Eskom, the South African Property Owner’s Association. The Forum provides an information sharing and networking platform for members on energy efficiency. The Forum is highly successful with over 900 registered members, and an average of 160 attendees at each meeting which takes place three times a year. The Forum meetings offer case studies on energy efficiency retrofits, information on financing options, policy issues and training opportunities. The Forum also coordinates an annual Marketplace, an event where suppliers of energy efficiency products and services showcase their offerings to building owners and managers. The Forum surveys show a high degree of satisfaction and of commitment to implementing learning’s amongst the members. To commend excellence and innovation in energy efficiency, the Forum partners have created the Energy Efficiency Forum Awards.
