Informal households are defined as houses that don't meet architectural regulations. These households have inadequate stormwater structures which make them susceptible to flooding. Climate change is expected to bring more intense and frequent downpours which increases the risk of flooding. Flooding in informal settlements is a major health risk as it increases the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.1Cities-9.0a-C4-RiskDescription4

798CDP Cities 201435863City of DurbanRisks & AdaptationPhysical RisksNotRepeatable2.1Cities-2.1-PhysicalRisksDurban faces development challenges as an artefact of apartheid. Climate change seriously threatens to derail development gains made since the advent of democracy in 1994. Two-thirds of the Durban area is rural or peri-urban, and there are large informal settlements. Many of these are inappropriately located in areas that put residents at risk from climate change impacts e.g. within flood lines. High levels of poverty and underdevelopment mean that many community members are directly reliant upon ecosystems services obtained from the ecosystems within which they live. Climate change has the potential to impact heavily upon these people if the ecosystems are degraded. If, however, these ecosystems are well conserved and managed, then they have the potential of buffering community members from impacts.00
