130686CDP Cities 201731156Municipality of CuritibaGlobal CovenantCOM OverviewNotRepeatableM0.2Cities-M0.2-AdminBoundaryCuritiba is 323 years old, it is located in the south of Brazil , just below São Paulo and it is the Capital of Paraná State. It has 432 km² of area and a population of approximately 1.800.000 inhabitants. The population is composed by several different backgrounds like descendants of Italians, Polish, Japanese, Ukrainians, Germans, Portuguese and others. Curitiba is known in Brazil and in the world for its urban planning, environmental programs and its public transportation system – BRT (Bus Rapid Transit system that runs in segregated lanes). The model of urban planning in deployment since the 1970s combines land use, road network and public transportation system, which is known as one of the earliest and most successful examples of Transit Oriented Development (TOD). One of the most acknowledged measures of Curitiba’s environmental policies has been its implementation of parks and the creation of alternatives to minimize the negative impacts of urbanization on rivers. Back in the end of the nineteenth century, the first park was implemented, called PasseioPúblico. This one and many parks created in the city, as they have mostly been created along the rivers, has taken the function of flooding control measure. Curitiba has an international cultural reputation, with many venues, events and artistic life in areas such as music, fashion, gastronomy, and theater. The city has diversified its economic development through strategic investments in the creative economy and also engaged a broad network of stakeholders in building one of the most dynamic and modern economic scenarios of Brazil.1Cities-M0.2-C2-Description2
