138273CDP Cities 201760621Lilongwe City CouncilGovernanceGovernanceNotRepeatable1Cities-1.0-GovernanceOur strategic direction with regards to the Environment is to ensure that Lilongwe is in harmony with nature, that addresses issues of climate change especially pollution and that the city protects and expands the environmental assets. The Government of Malawi undertakes a tree planting week which is normally scheduled in January, every year and this always extend to the whole month of January. Under this national program, every citizen is encouraged to plant a tree or more. In the city of Lilongwe, this initiative complements the famous Lilongwe city Green campaign under the Lilongwe CDS Urban forest program. These are climate change activities.Malawi has embarked on the Beautify Malawi Initiative(BEAM), a transformative project which was concieved and is being championed by Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Malawi. Since its inception, this initiative has undertaken a number of Waste collection and greening campaign related activities in the city of Lilongwe. This complements another very important city campaign" the Keep Lilongwe Green and Clean Campaign". Malawi also is currently implementing the Public works program with support of the Local development Fund from donors. Under this program, the vulnerable group of people get cash after undertaking community work for 12 days and this includes tree planting, cleaning drains, waste collection from all public places in the city, road reshaping etc. This initiative really complements the Green campaign which Lilongwe city is implementing on yearly basis.00
138274CDP Cities 201760621Lilongwe City CouncilGovernanceGovernanceNotRepeatable1.1Cities-1.1-MitigationAdaptationLilongwe has since 2010 worked with Local and international organisations and Public Universities to implement Waste for wealth projects in different areas of the city. Under this project, beneficiaries prepare compost manure from waste for purposes of selling. With financial support from Pump-aid org, water aid and Lilongwe Poor Peoples Network (LUPPEN), the Council has embarked on the program of constructing Waste Transfer Stations where sorting and compositing of waste is being done. This intervention reduces carbon emissions and must be encouraged at all times. Trees are also strategically being planted to provide the much needed carbon sinks in the future.00
