Considerada uma cidade grande, tem uma população estimada de 553.393 habitantes (IBGE/2016) e é a segunda cidade mais populosa do Paraná e a terceira mais populosa da região Sul do Brasil. Criado por meio da Lei Estadual n°2.519 de 03 de dezembro de 1934, o município de Londrina foi instalado em 10 de dezembro do mesmo ano, desmembrado de Jataizinho. Situado entre 23°08’47" e 23°55’46" de Latitude Sul e entre 50°52’23" e 51°19’11" a Oeste de Greenwich, o Município de Londrina ocupa, segundo a Resolução nº 05, de 10 de outubro de 2002, do IBGE, 1.652, 569 km. O solo da região é de origem basáltica, entretanto, conforme a sua localização, em topografia mais plana e acidentada, apresenta tipos de solos diferentes, consequentemente, de fertilidade variável. A camada de solo é de profundidade variável, indo de várias dezenas de metros, nos espigões, até menos de um metro, próximo aos ribeirões, onde, na maioria das vezes, a água flui sobre a superfície compacta do basalto. O sistema hidrográfico do Paraná, pela declividade do relevo em direção a Oeste, em sua grande maioria, drena neste sentido, formando a Bacia do Paraná que, por sua vez, interliga a Bacia do Prata. Porém, o subsistema hidrográfico do Município corre no sentido predominante Leste, uma vez que o relevo está genericamente inclinado da região de Londrina para o Rio Tibagi, que tem sentido Sul-Norte, desaguando no Rio Paranapanema, um dos tributários do Rio Paraná. O clima de Londrina é classificado como Subtropical úmido mesotérmico,com chuvas o ano todo,mas com tendência a concentração de chuvas no verão. A temperatura média anual fica em torno dos 20°C. O PIB de Londrina para o ano de 2012, segundo o IBGE, foi de R$ 14.769.050.000. A composição do PIB do município demonstra a força do setor de serviços na economia local, onde Londrina conta com grandes hospitais e Shopping Centers, além é claro, de um comércio tradicional forte e diversificado, que serve de referência para várias cidades da região. Para fomentar o crescimento do Setor industrial e comercial a cidade está se equipando para dar suporte as novas e atuais empresas, com a implantação do Terminal de Cargas Alfandegárias (Porto Seco), novos condomínios industriais, Aeroporto e Parque Tecnológico. Já quanto ao Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano, IDH, possui valor médio de 0,778 para o ano de 2010 (IBGE).24/06/2020 05:28:18
