Specifically, businesses located in flood zones will be impacted by storm surges, hurricanes and sea level rise. The Maryland Port Administration is taking actions to prevent issues related to sea level rise and storm events. Many businesses that could be impacted are located along the water in the historic districts and a number of these areas are located in high tourist areas such as the Inner Harbor and in close proximity to downtown frequented by many visitors. Baltimore’s tourist industry could be greatly impacted. Businesses will need to take their own steps to ensure that they are able to fully operate, or respond to climate and hazard events. Small businesses especially do not have the resources to effectively plan for how to mitigate losses as a result of climate change events.
