If your city does not have any relevant projects, please select No relevant projects under Project Area.4Project description4The City of Lancaster desires a biogas digestion plant to reduce biosolid landfilling, dramatically reduce carbon emissions, and creating a sustainable source of independent energy. The City owns and operates its advanced wastewater treatment plant (AWWTP), which processes waste from the City of Lancaster and portions of Manheim Township, Lancaster Township, East and West Lampeter Townships, Strasburg Borough, Strasburg Township, Upper Leacock Township, West Earl Township, Manor Township, Pequea Township, and East Hempfield Township. In 2015 the plant used $2.3M of energy (30.6M kWh and ~200,000THERM) which emitted 18,000 MTON of CO2. A biogas digester could save up to 85% of emissions, which would be nearly 15,000MTON of CO2 mitigated. Furthermore, it could power nearly all of the AWWTP's energy needs and potentially sell energy back to the grid providing additional revenues. The City of Baltimore (80 mi from Lancaster) installed a biogas digester in 2008 which cost nearly $15M for a plant of 130MGD capacity. Applying these numbers to Lancaster gives a ballpark of $5-7M, while also demonstrating the success of this kind of project within the region.24/06/2020 05:28:18
