At the national and international level, the City of North Vancouver has been supported by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) and ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21.In 1997, the City of North Vancouver joined the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program, a national program run by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Since this time the City has shown leadership in climate action by completing a Local Action Plan for Milestone 3 of the PCP (2005) and being the fourth Canadian municipality to complete Milestone 5 of the PCP (2010) for both community and corporate emissions. Provincial leadership and support has come by way of the Climate Action Charter, which the City became a signatory in 2007. As a signatory of the Charter, the City commits to measuring its emissions and pursuing complete, compact community development. The City also reports on its corporate greenhouse gas emission to the Province on an annual basis. The Province, along with BC Hydro, as a provincial crown corporation utility, has provided the City with planning and implementation funding for climate action activities. With the federal government’s renewed focus on climate action, it is expected that additional actions and support from the federal government will complement the City’s climate change activities.In 2017 the City of North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC) and Metro Vancouver Regional District signed an agreement to utilize waste heat generated from the new North Shore Waste Water Treatment Plant. This new heat recovery will capture thermal energy from treated sewage, for use as an alternative energy source that replaces natural gas, providing space and domestic hot water heating to LEC customers across the City of North Vancouver. The facility is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 7,200 tonnes per year by reducing LEC’s usage of natural gas for the purpose of generating heat.24/06/2020 05:28:18
