Port Allen has historically served as the center of commercial development in the area and the governmental seat of West Baton Rouge Parish. The City of Port Allen is geographically located in the extreme eastern portion of West Baton Rouge Parish in southeast Louisiana and along the west bank of the Mississippi River. Port Allen is located directly across the Mississippi River from the downtown area of Baton Rouge and is nestled within an excellent transportation system including an interstate highway, two major bridges across the Mississippi River, several state highways, a mainline railroad system, and both shallow and deep water navigable waterways. The City of Port Allen’s corporate limits are generally bounded on the north by Rosedale Road and Oaks Avenue, bounded on the south by the Interstate 10 and the Port of Baton Rouge, bounded on the east by the Mississippi River, and generally bounded on the west by the No. 3 Drainage Canal. The City of Port Allen also incorporated an area south of I-10 bounded on the west by Louisiana State Highway No. 1 and bounded on the east by the Mississippi River.
