It is located by the shore of a natural harbor in which the city port was built. The city has a particularly flat topography, its maximum height being the Montevideo’s hill (Cerro de Montevideo) which is only 135 meters high.The urban area of Montevideo occupies approximately 130 km2, and extends over 30 km of coast by the river Rio de la Plata. The countryside surrounding the urban area is almost 330 km2 width and it contributes with over the 3% of the national Gross agricultural product. It also supplies half the national demand for green leafy vegetables as well as significant percentages of the fruit national production.Montevideo has a subtropical humid weather, with an annual average of 16,7°C. Winter is humid, windy and cloudy, while summer is warm, humid and windless. The higher temperature recorded was of 42,8°C while the lowest ever was of -5,6°C.
