Su altura sobre el nivel del mar es de 1.752 mts. Está localizado en su mayor parte dentro de la planicie del "Bajío montañoso". La temperatura promedio máxima es de 27°C, la mínima es de 14°C y la media anual es de 21°C. Su clima oscila entre semiseco y semicálido, con una precipitación pluvial promedio de 575.3 mm anuales. En el año 2015 Celaya contaba con 494.304 habitantes, de los cuales el 48.1% son hombres y el 51.9% mujeres, la mayor parte tienen entre 0 y 29 años de edad, la edad promedio de la población es de 27. La densidad de población es de 893 hab/km^2, teniendo un indice de urbanización del 86% y el 14% restante vive en comunidades cercanas a la ciudad. Se estima que para el año 2030 la población incremente a 618,600 y en 2040 a 701,500El municipio de Celaya es conocido como "La Puerta de Oro del Bajío", es el tercero en importancia económica del estado. Cruce de rutas comerciales hacia el norte y occidente del país; destaca por ser punto de conexión a los mercados estratégicos para el comercio internacional. En cuanto a su red ferroviaria, en Celaya se unen los 3 corredores Intermodales de México. El municipio cuenta con 7 parques industriales, las principales actividades económicas son la industria manufacturera (70.45% del PIB local), el sector servicios (16.11%), el comercio (10.81%) , la construcción (2.62%) y la agricultura (0.02%). El PIB de la ciudad para el año 2014 es de 70,114 millones de dolares esperando alcanzar los 231,429 mdd en el 2040.Dentro de las características únicas y atractivas de la ciudad se encuentra la torre hidráulica del centro de la ciudad o "bola del agua", un dulce tradicional llamado "cajeta". El municipio ha realizado una diferenciación de 9 barrios, de gran importancia por su identidad histórico y cultural con una estructura urbana bien definida, plazas públicas y templos. Se cuenta con 312 inmuebles de valor patrimonial. Dentro del patrimonio cultural inmaterial se cuenta con mas de 10 fiestas religiosas, 3 fiestas civiles y 1 feria anual. En el municipio hay tres zonas declaradas Áreas Naturales Protegidas Municipales con un área total de 97 km^2 ofreciendo actividades de excursiones y campismo.Celaya se destaca por su actividad industrial automotriz y exportación de componentes alcanzando ventas de 613 mil millones de dolares para el año 2017, 31 mil millones en electrodomésticos y 29 mil millones en agroalimentos. Se han generado 67.700 empleos relacionados con estas actividades.En los últimos 35 años la creación y llegada de nuevas empresas e inversión extranjera ha propiciado un crecimiento acelerado del área urbana (3.3% anual) y ha sido mayor que la tasa de la población (1.2% anual). Tomando en cuenta estos valores se estima que para el año 2030 el área urbana llegará a 87 km^2 y para 2040 a 105 km^2. Con respecto a la población se estima que en el 2030 habrá 618.608 habitantes y en 2040 serán 701.478.Celaya redactó un Plan Municipal de Desarrollo con visión al año 2040, en el cual se describe la situación pasada y actual del municipio, se analizan los problemas actuales y se establece un plan de acción para alcanzar los Objetivos y Metas de Desarrollo Sostenible. Para ello es necesario que cada estructura administrativa del municipio (Cabildo Municipal, Presidencia Municipal, 16 Dependencias Centralizadas y 12 Administraciones Descentralizadas) cumplan con sus funciones de manera eficaz y transparente así como trabajar de manera sincronizada con las instancias Estatales y Federales del país.
