Su extensión es de 40 Km2 y unos 60.000 habitantes. Su capital es Pampatar, Casa de Sal, en lengua indígena. Las salinas de Pampatar siguen marcando el paisaje de esta ciudad fundada frente al mar Caribe ne 1571. El Centro de Pampatar fue decretado “MonumentoHistórico de la Nación” en 1976. El Casco Histórico de Pampatar se caracterizapor un crecimiento urbano de baja densidad,con predominio de viviendas en una sola plantay características coloniales.
