As the climate warms and more moisture can be held in the atmosphere, individual winter storms will become heavier with more snowfall per storm. Ice storms, like those experienced in eastern Canada today, will also begin to occur in Calgary. Ice storms in particular can damage infrastructure and cause power failure (e.g. downing of overhead powerlines), increase the change of multi-day service disruptions, and result in more injuries due to increased traffic accidents, or slipping and falling. The latter is a particular concern as Calgary’s population ages and is more at risk of serious injury due to falls.
