Up to end 2017, 2409 fresh water cooling towers have been put into operation. The estimated annual energy saving of the completed installations is 491 million kWh, equivalent to about 344,000 tonnes CO2 reduction/year. (f) The Government introduced Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (MEELS) in 2008 under which energy labels are required to be shown on the 5 prescribed products to inform consumers of the products’ energy efficiency performance. It was implemented in phases since November 2009. The first two phases of the scheme have contributed to an annual saving of about 175 million kWh and about 122 500 tonnes CO2 reduction annually. The grading standards of room air conditioners, refrigerating appliances, and washing machines was tightened and took place in late 2015. It is estimated that the upgraded standards could bring annual electricity saving of about 300 million kWh and 210 000 tonnes CO2 reduction. (g) The power companies also play an important role in promoting energy efficiency to help combat climate change. Under the post-2018 Scheme of Control Agreements (SCAs) signed between the Government and the two power companies respectively in April 2017, existing incentive schemes in relation to promotion of energy efficiency and conservation (EE&C) will be expanded while new elements will be introduced. More funds will be available under the existing energy efficiency funds of the power companies to support the carrying out of retrofitting and retro-commissioning, including the implementation of building-based smart/IT technologies to enhance the energy efficiency of a wider coverage of buildings. The power companies will also introduce new energy saving funds to further support other EE&C programmes.24/06/2020 05:28:18
