According to a survey carried out by Agência Municipal de Meio Ambiente. Goiânia is the Brazilian capital with the highest number of trees planted on public roads, with about 950,000 trees. The city also has the largest number of green areas in square meters per inhabitant in Brazil, 94m² / person , which leaves it behind the world champion, the City of Edmonton (Canada),by a small difference (Edmonton has 100m² / person). According to the United Nations (UN), it is recommended that a town has at least 12 square meters of green area per inhabitant. Goiania overcomes that rate in almost eight (8) times. Considering that the city has 1.3 million inhabitants and about 1 million licensed vehicles, the municipality has conducted an inventory of GHG emissions. The results observed showed which the sectors that emit more greenhouse gases are and therefore serves as the basis for implementing policies that encourage activities with less impact on global climate. The municipality currently intends to expand this information and to establish management parameters, and what aspects the investments should be focusing on. The "Recovery Project of Carbon Stocks in Green Areas in the city of Goiania", conducted in 2011, was based on methodologies approved by UNFCCC (United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change) and VCS (Verified Carbon Standard). It included areas possibly subject to deforestation and degradation, such as prone areas or already suffering urban invasion; and areas subject to the planting of small-scale subsistence. The study quantified about 510 tons of carbon- equivalent (CO2e) stored in the green areas of the city and suggested the adequacy of the design to plead international payment for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation, through the mechanism known as REDD. | 24/06/2020 05:30:36 | |||
