It is served by Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport located at 20 kilometers to the north. It is situated on the west coast of the island, spread over about 30 km of coastline, covering about 80 ha, and characterized by an anarchical and uncontrolled sprawl, infrastructure deficit and low mobility. The road network consists mainly of two axes that cross the city from north to south with traffic very often congested during the day.It is the largest urban center of the country, and the capital since 1958. The population of Moroni is growing rapidly, from 37,800 inhabitants in 1991 to more than 55,000 in 2016 with an annual growth rate of 2.1%. Youth accounts for 53% of the population, 42% of whom are under 15 years of age.The city is characterized by a scattered and anarchic development with uncontrolled urban sprawl, a lack of infrastructure and low mobility.
