De igual manera, es un municipio receptor de población que se traslada internamente en México. Según INEGI, en el 2010 llegaron en total 91 mil 456 personas a vivir a Guanajuato, procedentes del resto de las entidades del país. En cuanto a la migración internacional los desplazamientos de guatemaltecos, salvadoreños, hondureños y nicaragüenses a través de México para llegar a Estados Unidos han marcado las dinámicas migratorias en Mesoamérica y las relaciones de México con los países del Triángulo Norte de Centroamérica (Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador) desde hace más de 30 años.
