Next to both the state capital Sao Paulo (96 km), which is the financial and industrial heart of the country, and Porto de Santos (172 km), the largest one in Latin America, it concentrates the largest companies operating in the country and branches or representative offices of some of the largest ones in the world.Campinas is the main city of a metropolitan area composed of 20 cities, adding up to 3.0 million inhabitants. The Campinas Metropolitan Region (RMC) accounts for about 7,81% of GDP in the state of Sao Paulo, and Campinas alone accounts for over 3%. Campinas is a city of innovation in Brazil, having more than 130 technology-based companies and 250 spin-offs from universities, more than 50 R&D centers mostly for telecommunications and IT, energy, biotechnology, agriculture, nanomaterials and applied social sciences. Campinas is also a city of intensive trade and services, with 90% of companies located in the city geared to this purpose.The municipality has a good yield in relation to groundwater, and with respect to protection and stability of water bodies margins and water recharge of the water table; the local environmental policies are aimed at ensuring the maintenance of riparian vegetation or recomposition of them through these courses and their sources in the form of Permanent Preservation Areas.
