INTRODUCCIÓN El cambio climático es uno de los problemas ambientales más graves al que se enfrenta la humanidad. El calentamiento global es un problema que amenaza a los ecosistemas mundiales, comprometiendo el desarrollo sostenible y el bienestar de la Humanidad. Los estudios científicos muestran que el planeta se enfrentará a desastres humanos y naturales irreversibles si la concentración atmosférica de CO2 continúa por encima de 350 partes por millón.El 4º Informe del IPCC, Grupo Intergubernamental de expertos científicos sobre Cambio Climático publicado en 2007, establece que para asegurar una estabilidad climática a largo plazo es necesario limitar el aumento de la temperatura global por debajo de los 2ºC respecto a los niveles preindustriales lo que implica volver a concentraciones de CO2 de 350 ppm y en última instancia a las concentraciones preindustriales. Para ello, es necesario que los países industrializados reduzcan para el año 2020 sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero un 40% respecto a los niveles de 1990 y al menos un 85 % en 2050. Así como que los países en vías de desarrollo adopten tecnologías limpias que les permitan un desarrollo desligado del aumento de emisiones. Ecología y Desarrollo es consciente de que frenar el cambio climático es un reto colectivo y que requiere una acción inmediata que conduzca a un modelo de desarrollo bajo en carbono. Por ello, con el objetivo general de reducir el impacto sobre el clima de las actividades humanas.América Latina y el Caribe es una vasta región que abarca algo más de 2.000 millones de has (Mha), 46 países (territorios dependientes y departamentos de ultramar) y más de 610 millones de habitantes. La región presenta gran diversidad geográfica y biológica y comprende un gradiente ecoclimático que va desde el desierto más seco del mundo (Atacama en Chile) hasta una de las regiones más húmedas del planeta (Choco en Colombia).
