A Serra dos Parecis é o divisor de águas entre as Bacias do Amazonas (Norte e do Paraguai-Paraná (Sul). Possui extensão geográfica de 11.601,252 km². A altitude média é de 423 metros acima do nível do mar. Quanto sua vegetação, dispõe de matas densas nas encostas e no alto da Serra do Tapirapuã, e Cerrado no alto da Serra dos Parecis. Faz divisa com os Municípios de Sapezal, Barra do Bugres, Santo Afonso, Conquista d'Oeste, Campo Novo dos Parecis, Salto do Céu, Denise, Campos de Júlio, Nova Marilândia, Reserva do Cabaçal, Nova Olímpia e Vale de São Domingos, todos matogrossenses. As características do relevo são marcadas pela topografia plana (95%) e suavemente ondulada e montanhosa (5%). O Clima é Tropical quente e sub-úmido, com 4 meses de seca, de maio a agosto. Precipitação anual de 1.750 mm, com intensidade máxima em janeiro, fevereiro e março. Temperatura média anual varia de 24,4°C e 26,1°C, maior máxima 38°C. População estimada de 98.828 pessoas em 2017, com densidade demográfica de 7,37 habitantes/km². As empresas do município são estratificadas em indústria (6%), comércio (35,8%) e serviços (56,6%), totalizando 4.108 empresas ativas. Em termos industriais, conta com um Plano de Incentivo a novas empresas, que tem atraído alguns investimentos importantes (Lei nº 3445/2010 e decreto 363/2010 de 23 de novembro de 2010). O Plano oferece incentivo para a instalação de Indústrias no município como a doação de terreno e isenção dos impostos municipais, e o PRODEIC (através do Governo do estado - isenção de ICMS). O segmento das industrias é representado por 261 empresas, enquanto o comércio por 1.471 empresas e por fim, serviços com a maioria, 2.326 empresas ativas. As culturas de soja e cana-de-açúcar (representa na região de Tangará da Serra 50% da produção do Estado) são as atividades predominantes, havendo o cultivo de outras culturas. A pecuária é baseada na fase de cria, recria e corte, além da leiteira. Destaca-se a atividade de avicultura, representada pela 3ª. posição para frangos e 7ª. posição para galinhas poedeiras no Estado. O PIB tangaraense per capita é de R$ 26.327,27 (2015). IDH Municipal é 0.729. Pontos Turísticos de destaque: Salto Maciel e Cachoeira Salto das Nuvens, Estância Amazonas, Pedra Solteira, dentre outras cachoeiras, 54 aldeias indígenas, dentre outros. O saldo da balança comercial do município para o período é 50 milhões de reais, representando 622% em termos de evolução se considerado o período de 2000 a 2010. Sendo assim, o município mais exporta produtos do que importa. Entre as exportações destacam-se os bens intermediários, tais como alimentos e bebidas. Os principais destinos das exportação são os países do Reino Unido, China e Holanda que somados representam cerca de 78% das exportações municipais.
