An increase in precipitation was observed in all four seasons, with the winter seeing the greatest percentage increase of 23.4% (1.7”). Moreover, the frequency and intensity of severe storms has increased. Cleveland has seen a 16.3% increase in the number of heavy precipitation events (49 storms from 1961 to 1990 compared to 57 storms from 1981 to 2010). The northeastern part of Ohio is projected to experience on the order of 2 more days of heavy precipitation (events greater than 1.25”) per year. Heavy precipitation events of more than 2” in a day (i.e., 24-hour period) are projected to increase by no more than one day (0.25 to 1 days) by mid-century and increase by slightly more (0.75 to 1.25 days) by end of century. It is the main commercial center in Malawi . The City is located in the southern part of Malawi. Its influence goes beyond the boarders to neighbouring Mozambique and Zambia. Blantyre is the commercial and finance center of Malawi and the second largest city after the capital of Lilongwe. Historically, It is one of the oldest urban centers in east, central and southern Africa. The City was established in 1876 by Scottish missionaries and traders. Infrastructure challenges identified with respect to flood risk management, proliferation of unplanned settlements, access to health services, urban transport, solid waste collection, supply of drinking water, frequent shortages and low revenue collection rates.Census data indicate that the population grew on average at an annual rate of 6.2% from 1977 to 2018 – with the largest population increase taking place between 1977 and 1987. Approximately 60% of the city’s population are of working age, i.e. between 15 and 64 years. Almost 65% of the city residents reside in low income areas. The densest human settlements (i.e., at least 460 persons per 100 m2) are concentrated in Blantyre City – particularly in South Lunzu, Mbayani, Ndirande North, Nkolokoti, Likhubula, Blantyre, Limbe and Mzedi.The city’s population only represents 5% of the total country population. Additionally, the city contributes approximately 12% of the national GDP and 3.5% of national employment. Blantyre’s city GDP per capita of US$953.1 suggests that the city faces the challenge of transformation from a service center to a production center through rapid industrialization.In terms of night-time luminosity as a proxy for economic activity, areas northeast of the study area, particularly in South Lunzu and Mapanga, appear to have outpaced development in neighboring districts during the period observedIn terms of gross value added, approximately 38% and 30% of the output produced are in the financial and business services and consumer services sectors, respectively. The city should focus on expanding its traded sectors, as they are the most important drivers of higher productivity and wages. The City is home to most of the commercial banks and industries. The City offers numerous economic opportunities such as retail trade, construction, manufacturing of food products, transport, textile manufacturing, motor vehicle sales among others. About 45% of Blantyre’s population is employed in the private sector, 12% in the public sector, 36% are self-employed, and 7% work in the agricultural sector. Poverty in Blantyre stands at 24%. This is mainly due to poor lack of access to income generating activities and also loan facilities. The City is managed by Blantyre City Council in terms of municipal service delivery, development control and general urban management. The total area of the City is 250 Square Kilometres.
