De acuerdo con la encuesta intercensal 2015 realizado por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía, tiene una población 1,578, 626 habitantes, lo que la convierte en la localidad más poblada del estado. El municipio de León se ubica, al noroeste del estado de Guanajuato, en la zona conocida como el Bajío mexicano, siendo uno de los 46 municipios que integran la entidad. Se ubica entre la zona de los Altos de Jalisco y la Sierra de Guanajuato; colinda al norte con los municipios de San Felipe y Lagos de Moreno (Jalisco), al sur con los municipios de San Francisco del Rincón y Romita, al este con los municipios de Guanajuato y Silao, al oeste con los municipio de Purísima del Rincón y Unión de San Antonio Jalisco.
