É um concelho multifacetado em termos morfológicos, possuidor de uma ampla costa atlântica.Situado na orla ocidental do país, na periferia da AML, o concelho de Mafra abrange uma área de cerca de 292 Km², com 17 km de costa atlântica e uma população residente de 81961, segundo o Anuário Estatístico da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa 2015.Integrado nas dinâmicas sociais e económicas da AML, este território dispõe de acessibilidades rodoviárias que, juntamente com as infraestruturas coletivas que foram construídas, contribuem para a sua atratividade, quer para a fixação de residentes, quer ainda para a instalação de atividades turísticas, comerciais, industriais e equipamentos de caráter regional.Este concelho confronta-se com os concelhos de Torres Vedras, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Arruda dos Vinhos, Loures e Sintra. De acordo com dados de 2011, no concelho de Mafra o setor de atividade económica que tem maior número de população empregada é o terciário, com cerca de 74,5%. Este subdivide-se em duas áreas, social (25,7%) e económico (48,8%). Por sua vez, o setor primário é o que menos população emprega, tendo apenas 2,6%, sendo os restantes 22,9% atribuídos ao setor secundário. É de notar que, no período entre 1991 a 2011 (em 20 anos), a população ligada às atividades do setor primário caiu de 13,5% da população total para 2,6%. Uma diferença negativa de 81%. Os dados apresentados permitem concluir que o concelho de Mafra segue, de perto, a tendência geral para a terciarização dos setores de atividade.A característica da ocupação do Concelho de Mafra é a sua grande dispersão, associada às fortes tradições agrícolas e rurais da população, existindo cerca de 95 perímetros urbanos e 120 aglomerados rurais. É de acrescentar que ao longo dos últimos anos, o Concelho tem evoluído significativamente ao nível da rede viária, acessibilidade, equipamentos e infraestruturas. Sendo que se verifica um eixo urbano, com grande concentra-se de população: Ericeira – Mafra – Malveira – Venda do Pinheiro.Grande parte do concelho está coberta por vegetação natural constituída por um grande número de matas e bosques, sendo alguns núcleos florestais em áreas montanhosas áreas protegidas, com destaque para a Tapada Nacional de Mafra, com uma área de 1.193 hectares, constituindo o principal núcleo florestal do Concelho, tanto pela área que ocupa, como pela quantidade e diversidade das espécies da fauna e da flora presentes. Para além dos fins cinegéticos a que se encontra reservada, nos últimos anos têm sido desenvolvidos esforços noutros campos de atuação, nomeadamente ao nível da educação ambiental, desporto e turismo.A zona litoral do Concelho de Mafra é predominantemente formada por arribas rochosas altas e escarpadas.
