The degradation occurring within the Open Space land was degrading the farmers land as well, so the city created a stewardship contract with the farmer to help implement soil regeneration and sequestration treatments on the land. Because the farmer is within the private sector, he has access to Natural Resources Conservation Service cost share funding. Therefore, the collaboration enabled further leveraging of federal funds to support this soil work, which is the first of its kind being done in Colorado (following a CA model). When a school embraces the project:- Teachers are trained to streamline sessions of food education and physical education (basic motor skills) through certified professional training (75h);- School is bind to implement a healthy eating habits policy that consists in facilitating weekly sessions, throughout the school year, about food education, promoted by the teacher at class, in curricular context. The layout of the sessions, which are mostly practical (know how), is included in the Healthy Eating Book, including a schedule of activities and session plans per school year;- Commits to implement and monitor a School Food Policy, discussed and accepted by the whole school community within special students assemblies and meetings gathering the educational community;- Implements a Plan to promote the use of bicycles among students, through a special equipping call, in which the school is granted bicycles and an action program to teach cycling;- Commits to fully collaborate in the monitor of the process, as well as results evaluation regarding standard lifestyles through a number of preselected indicators (nutrition, nutritional status, physical activity, basic motor skills, ...)- The school canteen provides a daily Mediterranean diet based lunch. Besides, once a week a dish without meat or fish is served, thus targeting sustainable principles. These measures are accompanied by a strong salt reduction policy and food waste measurement. Cooks have ongoing training in child nutrition needs. Family dinners are organized at school throughout the year and, on weekends; cooking workshops for families take place to help families find healthy, sustainable options they can use at home.All the above will certainly influence the individual and global awareness of the relevance of healthy eating especially during childhood years.
