Increased winter rains combined with milder winters when the ground remains without frost for longer times will lead to increased nutrient runoff into water bodies. This in turn will lead to eutrophication of water bodies and potentially also an increased need for dredging. Dredging in the River Aura was seen as particularly problematic due to poisonous harmful substances absorbed in the sediment and management of dredging waste. River erosion and failure of river banks were also identified as a problem caused by increased winter rains. These were considered to cause potential damage to streets, bridges and buildings located in the immediate vicinity of the river bank. In the summer, rains are estimated to decrease and dry periods are expected to increase. The change may result in an increased need for irrigation in the Turku area.
