Concentrando cerca de dois terços dos habitantes do estado, situa-se na margem direita do rio Branco. Sua população, de acordo com estimativas do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), era de 326.160;414 habitantes em 2016. É sede da Região Metropolitana de Boa Vista, além de ser a capital estadual mais setentrional do Brasil e a única localizada totalmente ao norte da linha do Equador e a mais distante de Brasília, capital federal do Brasil. Limita-se com Alto Alegre, Mucajaí, Bonfim, Cantá, Normandia, Amajari, Pacaraíma e República da Venezuela.Urbanismo Boa Vista é uma cidade planejada, com o Centro disposto em formato radial, na tradição do urbanismo francês, com ruas voltadas para a grande praça monumental central, centro do poder. O planejamento da cidade de Boa Vista se deu em função da estratégia governamental de ocupação da Amazônia em 1943. Nesta ocasião, o autor do plano, o engenheiro militar Darcy Aleixo Deregusson, formado no Rio de Janeiro, se interessava pelas questões urbanísticas e já tinha participado na confecção do Plano Diretor de Volta Redonda (RJ), onde tomou contato com o pensamento urbanístico de Atílio Correia Lima. Atílio fora o responsável pelo projeto de Goiânia, que se mostrou a grande fonte para Deregusson. Cotejar a planta do centro das duas cidades deixa clara a inspiração.O planejamento de Boa Vista mobilizou uma vasta equipe dos mais conceituados especialistas em urbanismo, esgotos sanitários, esgotos pluviais, abastecimento d'água e energia elétrica com sua rede distribuidora. Elaborado no período de 1944 a 1946, foi antecedido de levantamento gráfico planialtimétrico e cadastral da vila e arredores, numa extensão de 20 km², com a confecção de planta na escala de 1:1000, recenseamento geral da população e estudos sócio-econômicos necessários à sua execução.É interessante notar que em um projeto feito na década de 1940, quando os automóveis ainda não eram um problema urbano, e em Boa Vista poucos existiam, o projeto da cidade já contava com ruas extremamente largas. As dimensões, aparentemente exageradas para a época, se mostraram de acordo com o progresso dos anos seguintes, fazendo com que Boa Vista conservasse a qualidade urbana ao longo dos anos.Possui área de 5.687.036 Km², representa 2,54% da área total do estado de Roraima.24/06/2020 05:30:36
