These systems typically consist of a heating and cooling centre, and a thermal network of pipes connected to a group of buildings.City Council's direction provided in December 2017 to advance the City's development of low-carbon thermal energy networks ("LCTEN") in Toronto as part of the implementation of goals of the Council-adopted TransformTO initiative. The Council direction included the following: negotiating a joint development agreement with the Enwave Energy Corporation ("Enwave"), the preferred proponent from a solicitation process conducted earlier in 2017 at the direction of Executive Committee, based on a set of principles; developing an appropriate governance structure and operational framework for the City and Enwave's relationship; and reporting back on near term LCTEN opportunities.One 13.5 acre, 3 million sq. ft. GFA development with net zero ambitions is designed for almost 100% of the heating and cooling demands to be met by low-carbon energy sources. Renewable energy sources such as geo-exchange borefields and heat recovery will help reduce GHG emissions at full build-out by approximately 90%, equivalent to 3,500 tonnes per year.A Low-carbon Thermal Energy Network (LCTEN) to serve a proposed 394,000 sq. ft. GFA affordable housing development leverages geo-exchange borefields and a centralized energy plant containing the heat pumps & heat exchangers estimated to reduce GHG emissions by 89% compared to Business-As-Usual, or an annual reduction of 345 tonnes.24/06/2020 05:30:36
