The EEDSM Program supports municipalities in their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce electricity costs by optimizing their use of energy. Upon applying, the approved municipalities receive grants for the planning and implementation of energy efficient technologies that range from traffic and street lighting, to energy efficient technologies in buildings as well as in water service infrastructure. The estimated electricity saving potential in accordance to technologies is up to 80% for traffic lights, between 40-70% for street lights, between 20-30% for office buildings and up to 15-25% for pumps that are used for water provision and treatment.The Msunduzi Municipality Electricity Department was approved funding as part of the EEDSM grant for the financial year 2016/2017 by the Department of Energy. The EEDSM grant was approved for the retrofit of streetlights within the municipality, based on the proposal submitted. The funds were used for the planning and implementation of energy efficient technologies. The project took part in four phases: planning, securing supply of streetlight technology, installation of new technology and creating energy efficiency awareness. The existing conventional streetlights within the municipality consisted of High Pressure Sodium (HPS), high-intensity discharge (HID) as well as mercury vapour (MV) and metal halide (MH) technologies. These conventional streetlighting technologies were replaced with more energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies. Once the installation was complete energy awareness posters were designed to promote energy efficiency awareness within the municipality. The EEDSM project aims to improve energy efficiency and create an awareness on energy efficiency interventions that can be implemented in the municipality.
