De acordo com a estimativa do IBGE, sua população em janeiro de 2019 era de 39320 habitantes. Apesar de sua pequena população, Brumadinho é importante para a região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte por causa de seus grandes mananciais de água, possibilitados pela extensão relativamente grande do município e pelo relevo montanhoso. Um quarto da água que abastece a região metropolitana vem dos mananciais de Brumadinho e dos municípios vizinhos, através dos sistemas Rio Manso e Catarina. Ainda no município, há uma grande lavra de água mineral, explorada pela empresa Hidrobrás e comercializada sob a marca "Ingá".[7] Segundo o jornal Estado de Minas, "a maior fonte de água mineral do mundo" estaria localizada na serra que separa os municípios de Brumadinho e Mário Campos.Além de ser o 8ª maior município minerador de Minas Gerais,[carece de fontes] com minas da MBR, Mannesmann Vale/Ferteco e Ferrous[8], Brumadinho é uma grande produção de cachaça artesanal.
