Transportation emissions declined by approximately 5% and building emissions continued to increase by approximately 8% between 2017 and 2018. Albeit this shows a minimal decrease in emissions overall, caution should be used when comparing the results of these two years given the change to the methodology and data limitations.Better data for transportation, natural gas and fuel oil use, and land-use changes are needed in order to draw more specific conclusions from emissions inventories. For example, transportation is our biggest source of emissions, and also the biggest location of uncertainty in our inventory due to old or incomplete data. Improved data sources are under investigation.Key conclusions that can be drawn from the 2018 GHG inventory include:• We are not on track to meet our community and regional emission reduction targets;• Fossil fuel use in transportation followed by building operations remains the largest source of GHG emissions in our community; • GHG emissions from the building sector continue to rise;• We have made progress in reducing GHG emissions from waste, primarily through widespread adoption of composting through the Greener Garbage curbside composting program as well as landfill methane capture; • Better data for transportation, natural gas, heating oil, and GHG implications of land-use changes is still required to improve the GHG inventories. • Considerable action is needed if we are to meet our community and regional GHG emission reduction targets.07/16/2021 01:47:15

This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2020. To view the complete cities 2020 questionnaire guidance, including all questions asked in 2020, visit https://www.cdp.net/en/guidance/guidance-for-cities. Please contact cities@cdp.net if you have any questions.
When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
