Cuiabá é abastecida pelo rio Cuiabá, afluente do rio Paraguai e que divide a capital da vizinha Várzea Grande e se encontra no divisor de águas das bacias Amazônicas e Platina. O Centro Histórico de Cuiabá reúne monumentos que compõem o conjunto arquitetônico, urbanístico e paisagístico tombado pelo Instituto de Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN), em 1973. Dentre os monumentos históricos presentes em Cuiabá podem-se citar: Catedral Basílica do Senhor Bom Jesus do Cuiabá; Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito de Cuiabá; Igreja do Senhor dos Passos; Palácio da Instrução (Museu Histórico e Biblioteca); Memorial da Água; Antigo Arsenal da Guerra; Museu do Rio Cuiabá; Museu da Imagem e do Som de Cuiabá (MISC); Museu de Pré-história Casa Dom Aquino; Museu Rondon e Marco do Centro Geodésico da América do Sul. A cidade foi umas das 12 sedes da Copa do Mundo FIFA de 2014, representando o Pantanal (a cidade se situa a cerca de 100 quilômetros da região pantaneira). A base econômica é a indústria e comércio.
