Environmental behavior change is a necessary step towards developing support for action against climate change and supporting the city’s adaptation efforts. In 2020, enrollment in the program topped 20,000 members since the program’s start in 2008. These households have registered for GreenSpot membership and agreed to green their everyday lives through a number of commitments. Collectively the whole membership saved more than $13 million, reduced CO2 emissions by 41 million pounds, reduced water consumption by 145.8+ million gallons, and recycled 32.4 million pounds. Households receive a bi-monthly newsletter, containing green tips, events, invitation to sustainability-related outings, etc. in 2019. The GreenSpot Community Backyards program provided 596 $50 rebates in 2019 on rain barrels, and native plants and native trees. Participants first must learn about the impacts of stormwater and ways to prevent polluted runoff. One hundred forty three community groups have committed to engaging sustainability. These groups include community gardens, area commissions, classrooms, churches, and conservation groups. One thousand three hundred and twenty businesses have taken the pledge which requires progress towards commitments to be environmentally friendly in five categories: Inform and Engage, Reduce/ Reuse/ Recycle, Conserve Water, Conserve Energy, and Green Transportation. Some businesses are invited to participate in the GreenSpot Sustainability Initiative class. They attend 6 monthly classes where they receive hands-on, professional support and recommendations on ways to make their organization more sustainable. The class offers the businesses a chance to network and share ideas amongst themselves. All members enjoy a GreenSpot window decal. High achievers, as well as the graduating Sustainability Initiative Class are recognized at the annual GreenSpotLight awards where they received special recognition from Mayor Ginther and city council. The collective climate awareness of GreenSpot individuals, businesses, and groups will help to support the cities adaptation efforts. https://www.columbus.gov/greenspot/07/16/2021 01:47:15

One of the main challenges for implementation is to find ways to finance planned activities and climate change adaptation measures. New forms of schemes and modern structures of financing, known as public-private partnerships, certainly represent a possible model for the distribution of costs and benefits of the implemented measure. In this way, we will avoid the previous traditional financing from the public sector and enable the private sector investments, against certain benefits. To that effect, we will single out ecosystem services related to flood protection and protection against soil erosion, which is directly related to climate change and healthy ecosystems, and represent essential protection against some of the most extreme impacts. For these reasons, it is necessary to have a comprehensive and integrated approach to the preservation and improvement of ecosystems, and "goods and services" they provide. The particularity of considering the financial framework is related to the analysis of costs and benefits of pre-defined measures. Sometimes new and unplanned costs arise in the process of implementing measures, e.g. for construction or maintenance. Likewise, it is possible to cause unplanned maintenance costs in other infrastructure systems by a measure's implementation. On the other part, as a result of prevention, costs can be estimated too high.07/16/2021 01:47:15

Description

This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2020. To view the complete cities 2020 questionnaire guidance, including all questions asked in 2020, visit https://www.cdp.net/en/guidance/guidance-for-cities. Please contact cities@cdp.net if you have any questions.
When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
