If so, please describe the expected outcome of the policy.2Please describe the expected outcome of the policy1Please completeCouncil is in the process of implementing a Sustainable Food Plan, which is expected to be adopted by the end of 2020. Over the last several years Council has created an initial work stream around sustainable food system efforts, including community gardens and composting. The role of this plan will be to coordinate these efforts across Council and ensure that food system considerations are brought into Council’s decision-making process. WCC has the opportunity to engage more intentionally with food systems efforts to bring a diverse array of social, environmental, and economic benefits to Wellington. This plan outlines specific steps Council can take to grow this work and embed it within Council's decision-making processes. Key recommendations include: -Food security work stream-Establishing a Wellington Sustainable Food System Community Working Group-Become a city signatory of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact-Embedding food system concepts as a decision making criteria for Business Units across CouncilPotential beneficial outcomes:-Wellington’s food supply enters the city through one main highway and one port. In the case of a natural disaster, Wellington’s main food delivery transport routes could easily be cut off. Expanding the local network of food production has the added benefit of making the city more resilient. -Wellington houses several low-income neighbourhoods that are not within walking distance of a grocery store. For residents of these neighbhourhoods, daily food access is an expensive and time consuming struggle. Expanding access to farmer's markets and community gardens would ensure vulnerable communities are supported to make healthy and cost-effective food choices. -Organic material represents 31.9% of general waste in Wellington Region. Reconnecting this waste stream into the food system through municipal composting is both a challenge and an opportunity for Wellington. -Currently there is very little coordinated food systems action in Wellington at the municipal level. Wellington does not have an established action plan or working group set up to lead food systems work. This plan will help direct resources to those areas.07/16/2021 01:47:15

Description

This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2020. To view the complete cities 2020 questionnaire guidance, including all questions asked in 2020, visit https://www.cdp.net/en/guidance/guidance-for-cities. Please contact cities@cdp.net if you have any questions.
When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
