121006Cities 2020202036254Comune di VeneziaItalyEuropeIntroduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeThe City of Venice is located in a coastal area of Northern Italy. The whole city size is about 417 km², with 260 km² of water surface (the most important of which is the Venice Lagoon). The area is very diverse but essentially it is divided between the lagoon and the mainland. Four different town districts are located on the mainland (Mestre, Favaro Veneto, Chirignago Zelarino and Marghera). The lagoon includes the Historical City of Venice, Burano and Murano islands, a great number of minor islands; Lido of Venice and Pellestrina are the barrier islands which separate the lagoon from the Adriatic sea. The whole lagoon, including the historical archipelagos, has been identified by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1987. Venice is the capital of the Metropolitan City and of the Veneto Region so that all the most important administrative activities are concentrated there. Three different universities, a great number of cultural foundations and research Entities, the recurrence of cultural events (e.g. Biennale, Venice Film Festival), exhibitions and conferences put Venice as a big cultural centre for the North-East Italy and one of the most important in the world. In addition, Marco Polo Airport (11 184 608 passengers) , the industrial commercial and touristic port, railways and motorways make Venice a centre of interests. The lagoon area also is a place where important arts and crafts activities take place (e.g., the artistic glass of Murano and shipyards). Venice is also one of the the most visited city in Italy with more than 30 million visitors a year.07/16/2021 01:47:15
