The Greco – Romans and all other eastbound Western trade interest had their strong presence here early period of trade and commerce. It is the largest urban agglomeration and nerve centre of all commercial and economic activities in the state. The city is set over 107.13 Km 2 and has a population of 601,574 with a density of 5914 people per km 2 .The city is home to the only stock exchange in Kerala and has also witnessed considerable investment for industrial growth. Its port operates as an international container transshipment terminal, houses oil refineries, supports commercial maritime businesses and is also home to the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. The city has a strong deep water economy and is the second most important port city on the western coast of India. The city is an important tourist site which attracts the most domestic and international tourists in Kerala.The current administrative limits of Kochi Municipal corporation include Mainland Ernakulam, Fort Kochi - Mattancery island, Willington man-made islands and some islets in Vembanad lake.
