| 121927 | Cities 2020 | 2020 | 50540 | City of Albuquerque | United States of America | North America | Introduction | 0.1 | Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below. | 2 | Description of city | 1 | Please complete | Situated in a rift valley between the Sandia Mountain and the Rio Grande, Albuquerque is located in a high-elevation desert with a unique, arid climate. While officially founded in 1706, Albuquerque reflects the area’s rich cultural history dating back 10,000 years. Here in the Southwestern high desert, many people shared the landscape including the Tiwa and Zuni Puebloans and four distinct Apache nations. Drawing from Native, Spanish and American settler influences, Albuquerque has grown into unique multi-cultural hub where all people are represented. Within the city limits, prominent features of this past are still easily reached; from the relics of ancient cultures in Petroglyph National Monument, to Old Town’s Spanish adobe church, to the classic neon lights peppered down Route 66. Economically, Albuquerque is as diverse as its citizens. Thanks to 18th century industrialization and railway expansion, and the 19th century establishment of major institutions in the city center, Albuquerque is considered the heartbeat of New Mexico. Major influencing drivers include the University of New Mexico, Sandia Labs, proximal military bases, and the largest concentration of medical centers found in the state. Albuquerque is currently experiencing a growth in the solar sector and an immigration of remote workers, driven in part by its 310 sunny days a year and low cost of living. Complimenting this economic tapestry is Albuquerque’s mild climate and access to year-round outdoor activities. Climate refugees, retirees, and outdoor enthusiasts alike are drawn to the city, enjoying its central location in the Land of Enchantment, contact with the Rio Grande, and proximity to the Sandia Mountains bordering it to the east. Current citizens enjoy four distinct seasons, low humidity, and easy access to mountain trails and stunning sunsets. The open Rio Grande corridor is particularly revered, as it represents one of the few free-flowing rivers featured in a major city. Thanks to the early influence of the then-resident Aldo Leopold, this natural greenway now offers space for both humans and wildlife to thrive. With one foot in the past, one foot in the present, and both eyes on the future, the City of Albuquerque is committed to addressing the impacts of climate change. The City continues to make concerted efforts to address its most pressing needs. In 2017, the City and surrounding County came together to map out the current comprehensive plan that designs a future with sustainability, equity, and health is at its core. This document helps the city actively improve the lives of our homeless and most marginalized and take aggressive action to reduce the city’s contribution to climate change. The City of Albuquerque hopes that by joining CDP’s platform we can contribute to, and learn from, this growing network to motivate critical climate action. | Albuquerque, NM City Boundary.jpg | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | ||
