The city lies at 27°21” N and 88°37” and is flanked by two rivers, namely Rorochu and Ranikhola in the east and west, respectively. Average temperature ranges from an average maximum of 22°C in summer to an average minimum of 4°C in winter, while snowfall is rare. The monsoon season from June to September is characterized by intense torrential rains often causing landslides that block Gangtok’s land access to the rest of the country. Gangtok falls under seismic Zone-IV and is subject to frequent earthquakes. Gangtok’s economy is largely based on hospitality. Summers and springs are the most popular tourist seasons. Overtime, ecotourism has emerged as an important economic activity in the region, which includes trekking, mountaineering, river rafting and other nature-oriented activities. The city does not have any large industry. However, cottage industries such as watchmaking and handicraft industries have a prominent presence in the city. Gangtok was notified as a municipal corporation by the state government through the Sikkim Municipalities Act of 2007. Spread over an area of 19.28 sq.km, Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) has administration over 17 wards to which it supplies basic amenities. The elected body of the Corporation is headed by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and consists of 15 councillors representing a ward each.07/16/2021 01:47:15
