Se ubica al centro sur poniente dentro de este estado ocupando parte de la zona central y del bajío de la República Mexicana. Se lo conoce como la capital mundial de las fresas. Su principal vocación económica es la agricultura y la industria automotriz. Es uno de los principales polos de desarrollo económico a nivel nacional debido a su elevado índice de atracción de inversión extranjera directa. El Municipio cuenta con una posición geográfica estratégica al estar ubicado en una planicie al centro del país y conformar junto con Celaya, Salamanca y León el denominado “Corredor Industrial”. Colinda al Norte con los municipios de Guanajuato y Silao, al Sur con los municipios de Abasolo y Pueblo Nuevo, al Oriente con el municipio de Salamanca y al Poniente con los municipios de Romita y Abasolo. El Municipio con base en el límite territorial utilizado para el presente estudio tiene una extensión territorial de 851.64 km². Actualmente la superficie de la ciudad de Irapuato (mancha urbana) oscila alrededor de los 68.4 km², representando el 7.9% de la extensión total del mismo. Representa el segundo municipio más poblado del Estado de Guanajuato con 529,440 habitantes, de los cuales más del 70% vive en la mancha urbana. Su posición céntrica y bien comunicada lo ha convertido en los últimos años en el principal nodo de comunicaciones del Estado y en uno de los centros logísticos y de transportes del sur-oeste. Irapuato conforma junto con Salamanca desde el 19 de mayo del 2011 el Área Metropolitana de Irapuato - Salamanca siendo el principal nodo de esta conurbación. Además, conforma junto a los municipios de Celaya Cortázar Villagrán, Salamanca, Silao, León, la aglomeración urbana de municipios guanajuatenses del corredor industrial del Bajío.
