Desde el punto de vista político administrativo , san Pedro de la Paz pertenece a la región de Bío Bío. Limita al norte con la ribera sur del río Bio Bio, en su extremo poniente, lo que la sitúa muy próxima al centro geográfico de Chile Continental., Limita al norte con con la ribera sur del río Bio Bio, al oeste con el Océano pacifico, al este con la Cordillera de Nahuelbuta y al sur con la comuna de Coronel. La comuna se ubica en las coordenadas 36°50´00". El territorio abarca una superficie 112,5 km2.El sistema territorial de la comuna esta conformado por un conjunto de elementos articulados por: LA CONFIGURACIÓN GEOMORFOLOGICA O RELIEVE DE LA COMUNA, esta comuna presenta dos denominada "Relieves Altos" que corresponde a la Cordillera de Nahuelbuta y planicies litorales, y otras dos denominadas "Relieves Bajos" que corresponde a la llanura litoral y la terraza fluvial del río Bío Bío, LA VIALIDAD ESTRUCTURANTE DE LA COMUNA CONSIDERA PRINCIPALEMTE LA RUTA 160, este eje estructura el emplazamiento de los sectores urbanos y espacio de uso industrial de la comuna, configurándose como eje columna del territorio. SISTEMA DE CENTROS POBLADOS las zonas pobladas de la comuna comprenden dos etapas de desarrollo, desde los años 80s, y 90s este crecimiento poblacional permitió duplicar la población 70 mil hab. a 130 mil hab. durante los últimos 20 años. El ultimo censo, año 2017 la comuna posee 131.808 habitantes, de los cuales 52,3 % son mujeres y un 47.7% son hombres. Algunos datos demográficos son edad promedio de la población 33,6 años, dependencia 0-14 años 33,7%, dependencia 65 o mas años 12,9% Pueblos originarios 10%, hacinamiento 6% , Red pública de agua 99%, jefas de hogar 41% entre otros.Desde otro punto de vista en San Pedro de la Paz podemos observar la presencia de diversos ecosistemas de relevancia en el territorio comunal, donde la integración de clima, relieve e hidrología ofrece un sin número de escenarios paisajísticos, todos ellos acompañados por una gran diversidad de recurso naturales. dan origen al menos cuatro ecosistemas en la comuna; estos son el ECOSISTEMA CORDILLERANO esta presentado por cerros de baja altura y constituye el ecosistema mas extenso de la comuna con 50 Km2. en algunas quebradas se encuentran fragmentos de bosque nativo esclerófilos con flora y fauna asociada. Las vastas plantaciones forestales existen representan un ecosistema artificial, que provoca una disminución de la biodiversidad y riqueza de especies en relación al bosque nativo. ECOSISTEMAS HUMEDALES en la comuna se encuentran humedales dulceacuícolas integrados al ecosistema urbano, proporcionando variado y relevantes servicios ecosistémicos a la sociedad, destacando la mantención de la trama trófica, conectividad ecosistémica entre la cordillera y la costa, estabilización y control de erosión retención de contaminantes, amortiguación hidráulica de las inundaciones invernales, embellecimiento escénico, recreación pasiva y educación ambiental. ECOSISTEMA LACUSTRE la vegetación asociada a las lagunas, en general, corresponde a la flora acuática, las plantaciones de eucaliptus, plantaciones de pino, matorral mixto, matorral abierto, bosque nativo esclerófilo, bosque matorral nativo. dentro de las principales especies arbóreas están el olivillo, peumo, boldo, avellano, litre, maqui, canelo, pino insigne eucaliptus. En las lagunas se puede encontrar algunas variedades de peces y diversos tipos de aves, entres ellas patos, cisnes de cuello negro, garzas y taguas entre otras. ECOSISTEMA ESTUARIO este ecosistema comprende del rio Bío Bío, la playa y el estuario producto de la convergencia del río con el mar. El río cuenta con vasta biodiversidad de especies ícticas, moluscos, insectos, poliquetos entre otros, que hacen de este río un ecosistema rico y diverso.
