143722Cities 2020202017411Southend on Sea Borough CouncilUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandEuropeIntroduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeThe area under Southend Borough Council contains 182,500 residents stretching from Leigh-on-Sea to Shoeburyness, in the South East of England and is made of 17 wards. It sits along the River Thames and is situated 40 miles to the east of London. The borough comprises of almost 600 hectares of parks and open spaces are accessible to residents within our Borough, including district, local and neighbourhood parks, playing fields and woodlands. We also benefit from street trees, private gardens, rivers, streams and over 7 miles of award winning beaches that collectively make up Southend’s green - and blue - spaces. In October 2019, the Borough’s canopy cover was measured at 12%. This includes both council-owned and privately owned trees. The cover ranged from 23.3% in Belfairs Ward to just 8.5 % in the Westborough Ward. The volume of canopy cover in the Borough was below the average of 17% that was found in a review of canopy cover across 320 cities and towns in the United Kingdom (Urban Tree Canopy, 2018).The climate proves to be one of the driest areas of the UK with little rainfall throughout the year and lots of sunshine. Shoeburyness is often listed as the driest place in England.Southend has lower rates of pay over surrounding areas (e.g. London) but around 50% of the working age residents have a 'professional' career. As London is only 1 hour away by train, Southend is a preferred place to live for a short commute and cheaper housing/rental prices in comparison to London. It is the seventh most densely populated area in the UK outside of the London Boroughs, although 1 in 10 households are listed as being fuel poor. It is also seen as a 'silver city', which has a larger than average population of people who are aged 65+. Both factors contribute to the borough having more vulnerable people to the future impacts of climate change, particularly heat stress.Southend has the longest pleasure pier in the world which along with the miles of sandy beaches makes it an attractive place to live.Southend is well known for the coastal tourism and is a regular day out for many visitors. It also has London Southend Airport that flies to many different destinations and serviced around 2 million passengers in 2019.We are a unitary authority , a single tiered local authority, and are responsible for government functions within the area.SBC boundary.PNG07/16/2021 01:47:15

Description

This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2020. To view the complete cities 2020 questionnaire guidance, including all questions asked in 2020, visit https://www.cdp.net/en/guidance/guidance-for-cities. Please contact cities@cdp.net if you have any questions.
When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
