144521Cities 2020202042120City of SalvadorBrazilLatin AmericaClimate Hazards and VulnerabilityClimate Hazards2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city2The indicators referring to adaptive capacity, were related to the population's socioeconomic condition and infrastructures that can increase the population's capacity in the response, should the threat materialize. Related to socioeconomic status, the average income stands out. Income allows citizens to adopt preventive measures or to recover more quickly in the event of an extreme event. According to IBGE (2017), the state of Bahia has almost half of its population under the poverty line (44.8%). The city of Salvador is the most developed in the state, yet it still holds a large number of people living under the poverty line - 24.2% of the population, which corresponds to 715 thousand people. Waterborne diseases, such as diarrhea, are related to several environmental and socioeconomic factors such as: family income, home density, maternal education, water supply and destination of waste, place of residence (rural and urban), malnutrition, among others. It is noteworthy that access to sanitation is one of the conditioning factors of these diseases. In this sense, the municipality of Salvador has, according to IBGE data for 2010, 92.8% of households with adequate sanitation and 35% of urban households on public roads with adequate urbanization, that is, with the presence of manholes, sidewalk, paving and curb. In view of the geomorphological characteristics, the variety of meteorological systems that cause intense and persistent rains, the large contingent of low-income population living in risk areas, the municipality of Salvador registers a high number of natural disasters.07/16/2021 01:47:15

144530Cities 2020202035858City of Cape TownSouth AfricaAfricaWater SecurityWater Supply14.2aPlease identify the risks to your city’s water security as well as the timescale and level of risk.5Risk description1The City has generally been able to successfully manage and reduce demand growth, however Cape Town suffered from a severe drought lasting between 2015 and 2018 which severely impacted on the City's water storage. Stringent level 6b water restrictions were put in place to reduce demand, in conjunction with other demand-side management interventions such as pressure reduction and leaks repairs. This was successful in ensuring that water supplies did not run out in 2018. It is anticipated that in the longer term, water demand will continue to grow and place stress on the supply system. The City is currently conducting cooperative planning with the national Department of Water and Sanitation to ensure that additional water supply infrastructure is constructed to avoid a long-term water deficit in the region, while also looking at options for increasing water supply through alternative sources within the City’s control. Climate change is projected to significantly reduce rainfall in the mid and far future periods, and this has been included as a scenario in the planning for future infrastructure. Climate change will also lead to increased evaporation and increased demand due to higher temperatures. The region is known to experience droughts and climate change is likely to make these more intense and frequent.07/16/2021 01:47:15
