147741Cities 202020208242City of HelsinkiFinlandEuropeFood12.3Does your city have any policies relating to food consumption within your city? If so, please describe the expected outcome of the policy.2Please describe the expected outcome of the policy1Please completeThe Helsinki Carbon Neutral Program includes six actions aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of food. Service Centre Helsinki takes part in five actions, of which the first two are focused on developing climate-friendly recipes. As an outcome, the consumption of red meat has already decreased in kindergartens and schools in Helsinki as meat-based meals have been replaced by vegetarian and fish alternatives. In addition, vegetarian meals have been added to seniors’ home meal menus. Service Centre Helsinki’s product development team is also actively testing new plant-based protein products, which in turn, has already led creating totally new climate-friendly meals. The second action aims to find solutions to tackle food waste. Service Centre Helsinki has been running several food waste pilots, of which the IoT –focused initiative has been one of the most prominent. In this particular pilot, artificial intelligence is utilized to measure food loss and generate real-time reports for kitchen personnel. Service Centre Helsinki has also tested the Lunchie App, which works as an online market place for leftover food. Lastly, Service Centre Helsinki actively develops ways to monitor and measure food waste in everyday operations. The third action aims to optimize food related logistics. In 2018, the logistic services were bid by using new environmental-oriented criterion. As a result, the GHG emissions generated by the transport equipment decreased significantly. Furthermore, the energy-efficiency of food logistics is continuously improved by optimizing the number of dispatches. The fourth action is focused on procurement criterion, which at Service Centre Helsinki includes the food. In 2019, new criterions were piloted and utilized as a part of meat and dairy procurement in parallel with developing a fully new CSR criterion bank. In fact, by the end of 2019, the bank already included over 200 sustainability criterion for food procurement. On top Carbon Neutral Helsinki program, the city council has determined that the consumption of meat and dairy ought to be decreased by 50 % within next five years. This decision will steer planning of menus in coming years significantly.07/16/2021 01:47:15
