148471Cities 2020202035475City of CalgaryCanadaNorth AmericaIntroduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeCalgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta, Canada, with a population of 1,267,344 (2018). The economy of Calgary is heavily weighted to the energy sector (oil and gas) which is reflective of economic activity in the province. The world price for oil dropped dramatically in 2014 which negatively affected Calgary's economy. The prices for oil and gas have rebounded somewhat, but remain low and has impacted the city and the province through a reduction in investment dollars and resulting lay-offs. The economic situation has improved, however the current unemployment rate in the Calgary Economic Region is 7.5%, compared to 7.1% across Alberta and 6.1% in Canada. In the past, the city has benefited from high personal income, low unemployment and high GDP per capita. With the recovering economy, Calgary is continuing to attract new people. In 2018 a total of 12 new subdivisions were approved for development to accommodate the growing population. A key challenge for the City of Calgary is to provide services (water, wastewater, fire stations, police service, roads, parks & recreation, etc) to an ever increasing population and geographical area while maintaining current infrastructure. Calgary has a land area of 848 km2. Calgary is situated at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River in the southern part of Alberta, in an area of foothills and prairie, approximately 80km east of the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The climate in Calgary varies greatly with the seasons, with temperatures reaching as high as 36 degrees Celsius in the summer, and as low as -40 degrees Celsius in the winter months.07/16/2021 01:47:15
