In the space of a few short decades, a once-successful industrial city that fell on hard times has reinvented itself as a modern, young, global knowledge centre.Malmö today is a natural hub for people and cultures from worldwide. The city’s inhabitants come from around 170 countries and speak some 150 different languages. This diversity is one of Malmö’s key assets and creates the basis for a rich cultural life. It also equips Malmö to perform well in an ever-more globalised world.Malmö is one of Sweden’s fastest growing metropolitan centres. Driving this growth is immigration, both from abroad and from other parts of Sweden, and the fact that many families choose to remain in the city after having children. The latest forecast suggests an annual net population increase of 33,000 in 2016-2019. This rapid rise presents opportunities and challenges for social welfare. Certainly, it requires that we constantly work to ensure the city develops on sustainable and inclusive lines. There is also a major need for construction of new preschools, schools and homes.Malmö aspires to be a sustainable city – socially, economically and environmentally. Businesses, researchers, local people and the city authorities are working closely together to reduce health-related inequality, especially among children and youth. And Malmö is also pioneering environmental zones such as Augustenborg, the Western Harbour and Hyllie. | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | |||
