San Luis Obispo is located on U.S. Route 101, approximately 10 miles inland from the coast at an elevation of 233 feet. There is a string of hills, known as the Nine Sisters, that runs through San Luis Obispo, most notably known for being volcanic plugs. The San Lucia Mountains are just east of the City and serve as the headwaters for the San Luis Obispo Creek which runs through the City’s downtown. San Luis Obispo experiences a cool Mediterranean climate with approximately 50 days of rain per year – predominantly in the winter months. Summers are generally hot and dry, with occasional fog from the marine layer coming off the Pacific coast. As of 2016, the population of San Luis Obispo was 47,117. Tourism is a major contributor to the City’s economy; travelers are drawn to the area for its access to outdoor activities including surfing, mountain biking, kayaking, and trail running. Downtown San Luis Obispo is centered around the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, and primarily features restaurants, coffee shops, clothing boutiques, and personal care services such as hair salons. California Polytechnic State University is also a large contributor to the local economy, bringing in over 20,000 students to the region every school year. The San Luis Obispo area also features a globally competitive viticulture industry and significant agriculture. The City is prioritizing in-fill development as well as a few larger residential projects that are currently underway.
