Please provide details on the boundary of your assessment, and where this differs from your city’s boundary, please provide an explanation.9Please explain1The City of Athens faces real and significant climate risks today, such as heatwaves, extreme hot days and flash floods. These events affect every Athenian, and as our climate changes, they will become more frequent and intense. Principle among these risks is heat. On average, the period 2005-2014 Athens experienced 32 days per year with daily maximum temperature over 35°C. High urban temperatures interact in multiple ways with the heat island effect - the phenomenon through which densely built areas in a city result in higher urban temperatures than surrounding areas - resulting in temperature difference that can reach up to 10°C higher in Athens city centre than the surrounding region.High temperatures and heatwaves impact almost every facet of the city, contributing to a rise in mortality, poor air quality, and economic losses. In 1987, more than 1.100 Athenians died during a nationwide heatwave and between 2000-2012, Athens has observed a 5.2% increase in mortality for every 1°C increase in daily max temperatures over 31,5°C. Likewise, smog in the city, which can trigger asthma attacks and other respiratory illnesses, is estimated to increase 6% for every 1°C increase in the maximum daily temperature over 22ºC. In addition, research suggests that cities can experience up to a 10% drop in sales during high heat events, with indicators suggesting a similar phenomenon in Athens. Hotter days also result in higher energy use by residents and businesses. Electricity use in Athens increases by 4.1% for every 1°C increase in temperature, costing residents and businesses hundreds of Euros in higher energy bills. This plan outlines 29 actions that the City is taking to improve the Municipality’s capacity to respond to rising urban temperatures; strengthen support for the most at-risk citizens; educate and engage Athenians; and change our built environment to create more liveable, attractive and sustainable neighbourhoods. These actions focus within the boundaries of Athens, as the Municipality of Athens has power only within its geographic space. However, some actions are envisaged where collaboration between the municipality of Athens and neighbouring municipalities is set forward, so as to adapt to climate change.07/16/2021 01:47:15

Please also select the most relevant assets or services that are affected by the climate hazard and provide a description of the impact.12Please describe the impacts experienced so far, and how you expect the hazard to impact in the future1Heavy rains are expected more often and that can create urban floods. Storm water floods damage infrastructure and properties and . Storm water floods can pollute groundwater and surface waters. Management capacity changes and capacity re- sizing will be needed, Possible traffic congestions and electricity distribution problems. Heavy snowfall and sudden slippery have impacts in wintertime, like injuries and falling tree branches. In agriculture, the crops will fall, the nutrients and pollutants start moving to waterbodies and have eutrophication impact or polluting impact. So water protection and groundwater protection measures are needed and the costs of management will rise.07/16/2021 01:47:15
